Doula Support
Supporting Pregnant & New Mums
After delivering early years classes for over 10 years, I realised I needed to give something more. So I trained as a Birth & Postnatal Doula which brings me a huge amount of joy and satisfaction.
About Me
I realised then that there was a lack of support in the postnatal stages of having a baby.
Besides, not everyone had their families in close proximity and even if they were lucky enough to have a great support network, often, people need to return to work and that is where the isolation can kick in.
I trained with a reputable Doula course provider in April 2018 and joined
Doula UK shortly after this time.
I have not looked back since and I am delighted to be working as both a birth companion and postnatal doula support for mums through all walks of life.
What is my role as a Birth Doula?
To meet with mother-to-be (and her partner if applicable) for two antenatal sessions before the birth and to be available for phone or email support as questions or concerns arise.
I will go ‘on call’ at 38 weeks and will be available 24/7 until 42 weeks.
When I am contacted, I will go to my client during labour, usually before they transfer to a place of birth (if planning a hospital or birth centre birth) or the midwives arrive (with a home birth).
During labour, I offer emotional, practical and informational support to my clients, adapting to what is needed.
Helping mum relax by offering a light back rub or massage.
I am able to offer help and suggestions on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning.
My main role (and most important role) is to provide nurturing, continuous support and reassurance to my clients.
I can signpost clients to other relevant professionals such as breastfeeding and lactation consultants, osteopaths etc.
What is my role as a Postnatal Doula?
I offer support and companionship to mums with a new born baby. My aim is to build a warm and honest connection with the family.
Taking care of baby so mum can rest, nap and/or get on with doing other things.
Taking care of and interacting with older siblings (where
required).
Light household chores including cooking and hoovering (I am not available for cleaning).
Following mum’s lead by helping her get into an established routine.
Helping mum become confident in managing the needs and routine
of her baby and household so that she is fully able to thrive.
If mum shows a keen interest, teaching her how to effectively massage her baby or perhaps show her partner, particularly if mum is exclusively breastfeeding as it can give her partner some one-on-one time with their baby.
Helping mum relax by offering a light back rub or massage.
Being available to care for baby overnight.
Encouraging mum to become more confident and independent once
my time has ended with the family.
Listening and having conversations with mum to develop a good rapport and to encourage less anxiety or stress but more relaxation. Research has shown that having good support throughout birth and after birth can significantly lower the chances of postnatal depression.
What qualities do I bring to the Doula role?
I genuinely adore children and the company of other mums. I gain huge satisfaction from supporting others, whether that be friends, family or clients, I feel this brings me the greatest amount of joy.
I am completely sympathetic to the challenges of being a new mum and as such, I come with absolutely no judgement.
How long have I been a Doula?
I trained in April 2018 and, several months later, I secured my first client and have gone from strength to strength. I am currently working as a Mentored Doula and I am working towards certification with Doula UK supported by a fantastic mentor.
What other services do I offer?
I am a certified infant massage instructor with the International Association of Infant Massage. I teach regular courses and workshops for parents in the comfort of their own homes as well as for NCT groups and in class settings.
I offer night support. If parents have already put a routine in place, I am happy to stick with that routine. My aim is to help parents manage a bit more sleep if they are feeling particularly tired but also to help encourage baby to sleep a longer shift pattern. I have been there with lack of sleep and I completely understand the effect it can have.
Please note I am not a sleep trainer but I can definitely signpost you to some great services.
I offer babysitting (including for older siblings)
What is my general availability?
Mainly midweek. Weekend mornings can be arranged by agreement in advance.
I work a minimum of 3 hours per booking for day postnatal doula work.
I work a minimum of 4 hours per night for night doula work.
Anything else you might need to know?
I am a member of Doula UK.
I have a current DBS check (less than 3 years old).
I have a paediatric first aid certificate (less than 3 years old)
I am fully insured as a Doula and for Babysitting.
I hold a clean UK drivers licence.
Fee
Birth Doula
My fee is £600.00 for a Birth Package. This includes:
– two antenatal visits (up to 2 hours each)
– four week on-call period from 38 to 42 weeks (I offer flexibility where possible) and one postnatal visit for up to 3 hours. This can be extended at an hourly rate.
– available by phone/email if you have any questions or concerns.
As a Mentored Doula, I charge less than recognised doulas. This is my way of showing respect to my fellow doulas who have been working in this field longer than myself which is reflected in my fees. The difference in fees does not mean the support will be any different. When choosing a doula, it is more about feeling the positive connection between you both.
